Hailin Zhongke Ranked No.1 in the Industry for its Tapered Roller Bearings both in Output and Exports
Hailin Zhongke Technology Co., Ltd was recently reported to be No.1 in the bearing industry for its leading products tapered roller bearings in the annual output and the export capacity for the year of 2008, with the output of 42.19 million pieces and the export amount of 29.75096 million pieces, an increase of 24.42 percent and 24.02 percent than those of the previous year 2007 respectively.
The 2007 output and export capacity were 33.9091 million sets and 23.9886 million.

Wafangdian Guangyang Bearing Group (WGYS) successfully acquired a facility of one petroleum machinery bearing manufacturing company through the negotiation between both parties recently.
WGYS has been paying great attention to the expansion of the production and the improvement of its manufacturing capacity & products quality besides the effort for the production environment.
This acquisition was regarded as a new starting point for WGYS to speed up the reform of its product technologies and expand the production & sales scale.

New energy-efficient bearing lines launched
New spherical and cylindrical roller bearings have been developed that meet the stringent SKF energy-efficient performance class criteria, says Tom Johnstone, SKF Group CEO and president. "Extensive testing results verify significant friction reduction compared to SKF standard bearings," he reports.
SKF energy-efficient spherical roller bearings exhibit at least 30% less friction and corresponding reduced energy consumption, considerably lower bearing temperature, extended grease life and extended relubrication intervals, according to the company. Five sizes of open bearings are the first to be introduced for industrial ventilation fan applications as part of the total SKF energy-efficient solution for fans. Additional sizes will be offered based on customer demand.
The first SKF energy efficient cylindrical roller bearings to be introduced are of the NJ series, which are designed to handle axial loads in one direction. Compared to the current SKF standard NJ series bearing, the new SKF energy-efficient cylindrical roller bearings exhibit a friction reduction of at least 30% in axial loaded applications and have a higher dynamic load rating. These new ultra-low friction bearings are intended for a wide range of applications, initially for industrial and wind energy transmissions.
The SKF energy-efficient spherical and cylindrical roller bearings are the latest in the company's energy-efficient performance class of rolling bearings. Manufacturing will be initiated during the second quarter 2009.
In 2008, in connection with the 100-year anniversary of SKF, the company introduced the energy-efficient single row deep groove ball bearing and the energy-efficient tapered roller bearing. The ranges in these two bearing types continue to expand as customer demand is increasing.
"We will continue to develop our energy efficient range of bearings as it is fundamental to our commitment to develop integrated energy efficient solutions based on our engineering knowledge in our five platforms," Johnstone notes.

Timken cuts 140 jobs
Timken Canada is cutting jobs and slashing production to one shift, fuelling concerns the plant may close.
The St. Thomas manufacturer yesterday issued layoff notices to 140 workers, meaning only 73 will be working Monday.
"It is pretty nasty," said Kathy Cornish, chairperson Local 4906 United Steelworkers, representing workers at the plant.
"People here are numb. We were not anticipating this."
The plant employed more than 300 a few months ago, but since then 73 have been on layoff and another nine were lost to retirements in December.

The greatest concern now is that cutting production to one shift, with its U.S. plants also under-capacity, may spell the death of the local manufacturer, said Cornish.
"The fear is very real. We have heard from the company about cross border issues . . . the plant manager has suggested we would not be viable on one shift," said Cornish.
However, Lorrie Paul Crum, manager of communications for Timken in Ohio, said the layoffs are due to the downturn in manufacturing, and the jobs will return when the economy does. "We are seeing the same thing all over the world, all our facilities are affected by this and we are adjusting production levels," said Crum.
"We are still looking for the bottom, for some sign of recovery and then we will happily put people back to work."
But she sounded an optimistic note on Timken's future in St. Thomas saying "the plant will continue" to operate. Timken manufactures close to its customers and St. Thomas helps supply Ontario, eastern Canada and the northeastern U.S. markets with the tapered bearings it makes, she said.
"We are where our customers are. It does not make sense to ship over long distances and we need to be where the customers are."
Timken has 36 plants in the U.S. and one more in Canada, in British Columbia.

China 2008 Bearing Exports Report
The government of China, General Administration of Customs, via the state-controlled Xinhua news, has released data covering its exports of all types of bearings, for December 2008 and the full year.
China's state-volunteered export data is notoriously inaccurate, tending to dramatically understate both the quantity and value. Although the specific numbers may be suspect, the data does offer insight to general trends in volume, growth, and pricing which have proven valuable in terms of general industry analysis.

There are also numerous reports that year-end data is subject to many government "adjustments" needed to show production met levels indicated by the central planners.
Although there is some seasonality apparent in the bearing export data supplied, China's bearing exports are clearly dropping more sharply than in previous years.

Sealed Bearing Helps Design Change in Lift Application
Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevators has long been China’s leading elevator manufacturer, supplying the elevators in many of the high-rise buildings that now populate this fast developing country. Development is so fast here that in 2007 the Shanghai Mitsubishi factory was actually the world’s leading volume producer, outperforming all the bigger-name international companies in this business.
With a wide range of lift designs and sizes, the company caters for many different customer requirements. But one requirement consistent with all their lifts is to have quick, quiet and safe elevators. And this is something that has become a particular characteristic of their range.
With this “guide” in their mind, they embarked on a new high-load, high-speed, elevator drive design, switching from a geared motor, used in all their earlier models, to a new direct drive, gearless, design. The new drive would continue the quick, quiet and safe tradition, and would be more compact and more cost effective. The elevator running speed would be 4 meters per second and the expected life of the drive system could be 20 years or more depending on operating conditions.
Fang Kai, section chief at Shanghai Mitsubishi explains: “The first designs met many of our specifications and performance factors, but one feature was a concern to us. In our geared designs, we used open bearings to support and rotate the gear shaft that assists in lifting and descending of the elevator cabin, and these bearings were lubricated by oil from the gearbox. But in the direct drive design, we have no gearbox and no gear oil, so the bearings needed to be greased. The use of open bearings would require regreasing, and we were concerned that minor grease leakages would find their way onto the brake mechanism. While this would not prevent the basic brake function, and regular maintenance would ensure safe braking, this feature was undesirable when measured against our ‘guide’ criteria.”
Solutions involved either a new design or to investigate if using a sealed bearing would meet their stringent design demands. The sealed bearing would need to contain the correct lubricant, in the correct quantity and could last the entire lifetime of the elevator depending on operating conditions, which was set at 20 years.
The most cost-effective solution was the sealed bearing but the only company producing such a bearing suitable for the application was SKF, and Shanghai Mitsubishi had no experience of using this bearing execution. So, Shanghai Mitsubishi installed an SKF sealed spherical roller bearing in their in-house test tower and ran endurance and function test for three months.
Impressed by the performance of the sealed bearing, the company switched the entire production to include this type of bearing and entered into deeper development talks with SKF. The direct drive design, as an engineering concept, was not new to SKF, which has been involved with such designs from its inception.
Kai comments: “SKF brought its extreme knowledge and sophisticated calculation programs to look at the complete shaft system, including bearings. Our engineers appreciated the confidence that the calculations showed and this resulted in confirming the life of the sealed bearing and especially the grease, which would not be changed or replenished for 20 years depending on operating conditions. Such was the confidence of our engineers that we also decided to replace the other bearing in the system with an SKF bearing. This project has brought Shanghai Mitsubishi and SKF much closer than just a supplier and customer relationship. We have seen excellent technical support from SKF, together with speed of action. As a consequence we are partnering on the shaft system and bearing requirements for the development of our newest elevator design which will be the fastest in China, descending at 6 meters per second.”

SKF CEO says Automotive division to make a loss in 2009

STOCKHOLM, March 13 (Reuters) - World No. 1 bearings maker SKF's Automotive division, which accounts for about a third of group sales, will make a loss this year, the firm's top executive said on Friday.
The Swedish firm is cutting thousands of jobs to meet a sharp fall in demand in the coming months as customers scale back purchases across the globe amid the wider economic slump.
"I have adjusted down my expectations for the full year for Automotive," Chief Executive Tom Johnstone said in an interview.
"I don't think that we are going to be able to compensate for the first half any more."
As late as Jan. 29 Johnstone had reckoned Automotive would make a profit in 2009.
He said the unit would now probably make a full-year loss, even excluding restructuring costs, but would be profitable again towards the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010.
SKF, whose bearings are used in everything from cars and trucks to industrial tools and wind turbines, made a pretax profit of 6.9 billion Swedish crowns ($802 million) from record net sales of 63.4 billion in 2008.
Johnstone said that, in line with guidance earlier this year, demand for SKF's products had fallen significantly so far in the first part of 2009 from the final quarter of last year.
"We had expected February to be better than January due to the holidays in January, but we haven't seen that," he said.
In the fourth quarter, sales volumes fell 13 percent year-on-year.
Johnstone said he expected group sales to rise in China year-on-year in the first quarter, but the growth would be lower than in the fourth quarter of last year.
In its fourth-quarter report, released in January, the company said it expected market demand to be significantly lower in all regions. China accounts for 15 percent of world demand for bearings, SKF said in its annual report for 2008. (Writing by Anna Ringstrom; Editing by Rupert Winchester)

Timken Inks Agreement to Supply Wind Power Equipment Manufacturer in China
